Hey guys! This post has been a long time in the making and will be even longer before all the dreams and plans I’m about to share are realized in real life. I’m excited to look back on this post once our kitchen is complete and see if we stuck firmly to the plan or veered off in another direction one way or another.
When we first bought this house, we knew that remodeling the dated, 1960s kitchen would be high on our list of priorities. In fact, as part of our first offer on this house, we even included a kitchen remodel rendering with the offer. That was only five months ago, and we’ve already reworked the plan several times over. But since living here, taking lots of measurements, and really thinking through EVERY detail, I think we have come to a point of knowing exactly what we want and how we want to lay it out so that we can begin to price things out and plan for the renovation for real this time!
It’s one thing to plan for a client remodel and another thing when I am the client! I’ve been dreaming of this kitchen for a while, though, and I can picture the end result in my head!
Here is what the kitchen looked like when we moved in. The yellow countertops and dated cabinets are certainly not my cup of tea, but quarantine has shown us that this kitchen is actually really functional and works well for our family! We are excited to change everything but also appreciate what we have right now. We have, of course, been loving the gorgeous breakfast room and can’t wait to make that room even more awesome.

We will be removing the entire wall in between the current kitchen and dining room and expanding the new kitchen to fill both spaces. It will be a total rework of the space with a big 10 foot island running down the middle.
I want it to have an English inspired feel. We will be doing full inlay cabinets in a warm white with a wood island and brass details. Real marble for the countertops and backsplash. I know the marble is bound to age and take on imperfections over time, but I’m ready for it! I just can’t imagine this kitchen with anything but real marble.

I’ve also been working on sketching elevations of each individual part of the kitchen so that I can think through the exact function and size of each cabinet—down to what I want the interiors to look like and where we will put convenience items like an appliance garage and built-in trash pullout.
Perhaps my favorite detail is the interior windows we plan on adding to divide the breakfast room/dining room from the kitchen. We want that to feel like its own dining space and have more of a formal dining room feel, but I don’t want to block sight lines from the kitchen, so we are meeting in the middle with a half wall, wainscoting details, and glass paned interior windows above.
The next step for us is to get everything priced out so that we can begin saving and put together an actionable plan for the remodel!
