Timeless design is one of the central principles of our work at Peach and Pine Interiors, but what does the word “timeless” really mean? Can anything in design truly stand the test of time?  At its core, timelessness is a cherished and irreplaceable aspect of quality design. Ironically, the term can sometimes feel oversaturated for the sake of marketing and trend, but authentic, timeless design is born out of carefully curated choices and is the cornerstone of what we create for our clients. From what we hear from you, it’s something you deeply value as well.

The Nuance of Timeless Design

It’s important to remember that even timeless design holds nuance based on era and architecture. We all walk around wearing “trend blinders.” We are products of our time and will inevitably bring inspiration and influence from our context into our design choices – and that’s okay! We should allow architecture and regional context to influence the specific aspects of timelessness we choose. For instance, a timeless color scheme in a traditional colonial home will differ from that in a bungalow-style home. So embrace the nuance, don’t expect perfection, and accept the fact that timelessness comes in many forms.

Choosing A Timeless Color Scheme

So where do you begin? One of the first decisions in designing a space is choosing the color scheme. Color not only pays homage to an era and style, but it also impacts the mental, emotional, and social experience emitted by a space.

With so much potential for impact, choosing a color palette can feel overwhelming. We’ve created a *loose* formula for crafting a color scheme in our projects, and we want to share that with you!

4 Tips for Choosing a Timeless vs Trendy Color Scheme

Embrace warm neutrals as a base. You can’t get more classic than whites, creams, and beiges.

Go bold in small doses. Consider an unexpected pop of color in a powder room or painting the trim a more vibrant color.

Add personality with furniture and accessories. It’s safe to be more adventurous with things you can change over time such as swapping out pillows or re-covering a sofa.

Go beyond social media for design inspiration. You’ll likely find similar images when scrolling ‘timeless design’ on social media. Remember that even ‘timeless’ has nuance, so look to older books, magazines, and nature for inspiration. Search out the architecture of the era to find color palettes that have already stood the test of time.

Following these principles, you’ll be on the right path toward transforming your space into a timeless haven!
