One of our priorities is to create spaces that are timeless and classic, and we often have clients ask us how to make decisions that will go beyond trends and stand the test of time. As a designer, I am constantly striving to learn and be inspired by timeless architecture and design to keep my creativity alive, and one of the best ways I know to do that is by setting aside Instagram and Pinterest (for just a moment) to learn from and be inspired by physical books.
It is probably no surprise that I am a total history and design nerd. I am constantly striving to grow my own knowledge of historical architecture and design so that I can translate that into the designs I create for clients. I also love to open a physical coffee table type of design book to look through beautiful, inspiring images. It just hits different than scrolling on a screen, and I think it is one of the best ways to truly discover your own design style. I love books that are new and books that were published years ago. It is important to look beyond the current moment to find inspiration if you want to create spaces that stand the test of time.
Open a book. Learn about the history of architecture. And study beautiful images. Ask yourself–why am I drawn to this image? What specific details inspire me?
A house that truly feels like yours won’t be a direct copy of someone else, but your creativity will be inspired by searching for inspiration in the right places.
Here are a few of my favorite design books:
