Shop the Cottage!

June 26, 2024 by jeremy Leave a Comment

If you’ve been around this year, you’ve probably followed along with us while we renovated our little lake cottage on Center Hill Lake. It’s a wonderful place to rest, enjoy nature, and spend time with family and friends. We truly love it and think the design is pretty nice too 🙂

While we don’t provide sources for our client projects, we CAN provide sources for our personal projects! So that’s what we are doing here – check out all the sources for the Hideaway Cottage below!

Also: The Hideaway Cottage is available for booking! Treat your family/friends to a cozy retreat in beautiful Middle Tennessee.

Historic New Construction: Entryway, Study, Living Room Tour

June 19, 2024 by jeremy 2 Comments

Entryway

The entryway is simple, and it suits the home just right. A few of my favorite details are the beautiful grandfather clock (which was actually made by the homeowner’s grandfather), the oversized bell jar lantern, and the curved details on the staircase. In the hallway to the living room is a beautiful china cabinet – a family heirloom from the 19th century. The antiques scattered throughout the home add to the sense of collected history in this house.

Study

On the left side of the entry when you walk in is this moody library painted floor-to-ceiling in Inchyra Blue by Farrow and Ball. This room was designed with the baby grand piano in mind, and we balanced it with a row of built-in bookshelves on the other side filled with books, family memorabilia, and beautiful decorative pieces. I love the casual feeling of the two mismatched chairs–also from our client’s existing collection of antiques and vintage pieces.

Living Room

The living room and kitchen share one large space, and the living space is the perfect place to gather after a meal. This living space has a classic symmetrical design with a centered fireplace flanked by two bookshelves. The bookshelves were the perfect place to highlight our client’s love for collected, antique pieces. The furniture, too, is a mixture of old and new. Two new sofas—one in a cream performance fabric and the other in green velvet—are mixed with two old chairs already in our client’s collection.

We grounded the room with a textured brown rug with a traditional pattern. And one of my favorite pieces is the oversized antique pine coffee table. This was originally a dining table that we had cut down to coffee table height to fit the size of this room.

Historic New Construction – Kitchen, Butler’s Pantry, Dining Room Tour

June 12, 2024 by jeremy 4 Comments

Kitchen

There are so many things we love about this kitchen – the oversized island with beautiful curved wood barstools, the beautiful natural stone countertops–quartzite on the island and honed Negresco granite on the perimeter, the natural light that comes into this kitchen through the windows on either side of the range, and all of the intentional cabinetry details throughout.

The cabinets are painted Stony Ground by Farrow and Ball. We went with a cabinetry-style range hood that has a sweet little shelf—perfect for leaning art. We believe that beauty and function can coexist, and this kitchen is a wonderful example of that. Everything looks beautiful and cohesive, but hidden behind the cabinetry panels are an appliance garage on the left-hand side, two dishwashers in the island, and an integrated fridge on the right.

One of our goals was to strike a balance between storage for practicality and open space for the eye to rest. We didn’t want it to only feel like a room lined with cabinets. One of the ways we accomplished that was by making the fridge cabinet shorter than the rest of the kitchen. It stands alone on the right side next to an open shelf and art light, and I love the way that it feels like an old cupboard mixed into the cabinetry.

Another way we played with a bit of asymmetry and created a moment of interest was with the open shelving on the side of the island. It’s a perfect place for large vessels, cookbooks, and mixing bowls.

All of the hardware and plumbing fixtures are unlacquered brass, and we mixed metals with oil-rubbed bronze light fixtures. The farmhouse sink is enameled cast iron. We added texture to the walls with a vertical tongue and groove paneling.

This kitchen is a beautiful mix of historic-inspired charm and modern functionality. It is the perfect place to host large gatherings and spend time daily as a family.

Butler’s Pantry

The butler’s pantry is one of my favorite spaces in this house. This classic willow leaf wallpaper by Morris & Co is the perfect complement to the mural in the adjacent dining room. We chose wood cabinetry in a rich, dark stain and we lined the backsplash with wood paneling for a historic-inspired look. The countertop is a beautiful Quartzite stone to match the island in the

Dining Room

The Dining Room is the first room on your right when you walk through the front door, and the beautiful color mural by Iksel is the pièce de résistance. Our client knew she wanted a mural in the dining room from the beginning of the design process, and we absolutely think it was the right choice. It is painted after a lithograph from the 1850s by a European artist. The color palette and the water scene feel so calming and inviting. The furnishings are simple because the walls are doing the talking. But simple can still be beautiful. We centered the room with a cherry wood dining table that is extra long and wide–this room was made for hosting! The dining chairs are French antiques, and the caning adds a beautiful, subtle texture to the room.
