Shop Our Space: Peach and Pine Cottage Living Room

January 25, 2023 by chandler Leave a Comment

chandler quarles interior designer

We have enjoyed our updated living space for nearly two years now! This room is at the center of so much of our daily life. With three pets and two kids, we certainly put the family friendliness to the test! Even after two years of Saturday movie mornings, kiddos wrestling, snuggles on the couch, entertaining friends, and hosting parties, we are still so happy with the space we have created and with every item we purchased.

Our performance fabric sofas certainly look a little bit more “lived-in” than they did the day we purchased them, but they are still beautiful and are standing up to wear and tear wonderfully!

I will always stand behind the quality of wool rugs, and this one is no different. It is definitely an investment piece; however, it is wearing wonderfully and truly made to last.

A leather ottoman was the perfect choice for this space. It makes lounging more comfortable, and the weather only looks better with age.

Maybe my only regret for the space is choosing an antique lamp as our main side table lamp. The look is perfect, but the pull chains don’t work quite right. It is…well…quirky 😉

Over the last couple of years, we have had lots of requests for details on items, so we wanted to share links for the things that we have used and loved! Here are all of the details from paint colors to furnishings and accessories. A big part of the work that we do is creating custom spaces that are unique to the homes we design and families who live in them. As a result, even in our own home, there are limitations to how much we can share because several of the large pieces are custom/to-the-trade only, but we have included links to the pieces that are still available for purchase!

An Interior Designer’s Guide to Home Design Books

January 18, 2023 by chandler Leave a Comment

One of our priorities is to create spaces that are timeless and classic, and we often have clients ask us how to make decisions that will go beyond trends and stand the test of time. As a designer, I am constantly striving to learn and be inspired by timeless architecture and design to keep my creativity alive, and one of the best ways I know to do that is by setting aside Instagram and Pinterest (for just a moment) to learn from and be inspired by physical books.

It is probably no surprise that I am a total history and design nerd. I am constantly striving to grow my own knowledge of historical architecture and design so that I can translate that into the designs I create for clients. I also love to open a physical coffee table type of design book to look through beautiful, inspiring images. It just hits different than scrolling on a screen, and I think it is one of the best ways to truly discover your own design style. I love books that are new and books that were published years ago. It is important to look beyond the current moment to find inspiration if you want to create spaces that stand the test of time.

Open a book. Learn about the history of architecture. And study beautiful images. Ask yourself–why am I drawn to this image? What specific details inspire me?

A house that truly feels like yours won’t be a direct copy of someone else, but your creativity will be inspired by searching for inspiration in the right places.

Here are a few of my favorite design books:

Architecture & Details of Design

If you are a true design enthusiast and want to learn and…basically read fascinating textbooks about design, here are three to get you started!

  1. HOME: The Foundations of Enduring Spaces by Ellen S. Fisher
  2. A Field Guide to American Houses by Virginia Savage McAlester
  3. Get Your House Right: Architectural Elements to Use and Avoid

Inspiration

If you just want to have beautiful images to look through and beautiful books to keep on your coffee table, here are three of my favorites!

  1. The Great American House: Tradition for the Way We Live Now by Gil Schaefer
  2. Timeless by Patrick Ahearn
  3. Three Houses by Rose Tarlow

The Brentwood Classic – Primary Bathroom Reveal

January 16, 2023 by jeremy Leave a Comment

We have worked with these clients on other projects in their home for several years, and we have all been looking forward to the day that we could transform their dated, beige, platform-tub bathroom into a fresh and beautiful retreat for this busy young professional couple. I am so excited that the day has finally arrived to reveal this luxurious space.

The bathroom itself had so much potential–with a vaulted ceiling and plenty of space! But the existing layout wasn’t doing the room any favors. A platform tub was center stage (pun intended) and the placement of the shower and water closet felt disjointed and asymmetrical. It took some creative reworking to find a layout that felt both symmetrical and spacious.

The new layout features his and hers custom vanities, a spacious shower, large linen closet, lots of luxurious honed marble, and a built-in sauna to complete the spa-like atmosphere. The color palette is neutral and sophisticated and will be a beautiful place to enjoy for years to come!
