Home Automation: 5 Simple Ways to Use Smart Devices In Your Home

August 29, 2019 by megan Leave a Comment

5 Simple Ways (1).jpg

Quick Overview

If you or your children ever watched Disney Channel in the early 2000s, you’re probably familiar with the movie “Smart House.” While this movie painted a sort of bleak and comedic picture of the potential dangers of home automation and artificial intelligence, we’ve nevertheless found ourselves right there, smack dab in the future. Even without a robot mommy maid in the picture, home automation can definitely be a little intimidating, especially getting started! It doesn’t have to be complicated. Let this post serve as a simple start guide to home automation.

Home Automation = Convenience

Home automation is all about convenience. You’re in bed already and left a light on? Ask Alexa to shut it off for you. You want your outdoor lights to come on automatically at sunset? Set it up to do so on your phone. You want your thermostat to stay between a range of temperatures without having to manually switch it from “cold” to “heat?” You can program that too. Home automation is really about taking tasks you do regularly and setting them in motion automatically. It’s the “set it and forget it” mentality.

Home automation is also incredibly helpful in accessible design! We discussed this a little bit on the Love Where You Live Podcast, Episode 6: An Accident, A Longshot, and Accessible Design with Derek and Leanne Lavender. Derek and Leanne use Amazon Echo devices in various spots of the house to assist in making the home more accessible-friendly.

The whole point here is – there are a lot of uses for home automation, and they can range from super simple to extremely complex. It’s about what you want to implement in your home. But if you’re looking for some simple ways to implement home automation, here are some of our favorites.

5 Simple Ways to Use Smart Devices In Your Home

1. Amazon Echo and Google Home

Probably the most popular “smart devices” at the moment are the Amazon Echo and the Google Home. We have Echos at our house, so I’ll be referring to those in the blog, but just know that the Google Home is an alternative option to pretty much everything I’m writing here about the Echo.

amazon echo plus

google home smart hub

These devices are smart home hubs + functionality, which means that they have intrinsic functionality without any other devices, but they also have the ability to be a “hub” that controls other external devices. The Amazon Echo family is paired with the Alexa App for your smartphone, which increases its functionality. A few things that we use the Echo for regularly are:

  • Listening to music (“Alexa, play spotify”)

  • Keeping up with a grocery list (this is great because you can actually check the list on the app when you’re at the store!)

  • Setting Timers for cooking (“Alexa, set a timer for 5 minutes”)

  • Getting a weather forecast (“Alexa, what’s the weather like today?”)

  • Setting Reminders (“Alexa, remind me to take the garbage out every Thursday at 8am”)

I could go on for days, but the idea here is that Amazon Echo and Google Home are powerful tools even on their own.

Another great thing about these devices is that they can control other devices such as light bulbs, TVs, thermostats, and more. Our home automation system is a little more complex, but simply put we can verbally control certain things in our home, such as:

  • Lights (“Alexa turn off the kitchen lights”)

  • Television* (“Alexa turn on the TV”)

  • Watching TV* (“Alexa play baby shark”)

Again, these are all external devices that can be controlled by the Echo acting as a hub. It is incredibly simple to set up, and a great place to start in home automation

*Amazon Fire TV Cube required to control TV, Soundbar, etc.

2. Smart Bulbs

61oreL70i4L._SL1500_.jpg

Smart bulbs are a really simple way to use smart devices in your home. They are programmable to keep a certain schedule, turn on or dim with your phone, or be controlled by a hub or other controlling device. The bulbs that I like most are the Singled Smart LED Soft White Bulbs. These work with both Amazon and Google devices, but they also have their own app so that you do not need a hub or other controlling device to use. They are dimmable and a very nice soft white which works in most places!

3. Smart Thermostats

Thermostats are another simple way to integrate automation into your home. This is actually one that I haven’t jumped into, but it is next on my list! There a bunch of smart thermostats on the market, but probably the most well-known are the Nest Thermostat series. The basic idea is that you program your thermostat to keep the temperature in a certain range, and it triggers your AC or heat, whichever is needed, to keep the temperature in that range. You can also control this from your phone, so if you’re in bed and freezing cold you can bump up the temperature without getting out from under the covers!

I’ve put together a short list of well-rated smart thermostats below, so be sure to check them out!

4. Smart Smoke + Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Another smart device that is incredibly simple to use are smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. These function just like normal smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, but they link in with an app on your phone to keep you up to date with what’s going on. Again, one of the most well-known smart smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on the market is the Nest Protect Smoke + Carbon Monoxide Alarm (2nd Gen). This is what we have at the house, and it’s great. It gives you a warning when it starts to sense smoke, you can actually SILENCE the alarm if you know it’s nothing serious (to a certain level of smokiness), and it lets you know when the smoke begins to clear. At all of these points, the alarm is sending updates to your phone.

It’s incredibly easy to install. There is a hardwired version and a battery version – just go with the battery version. It’s super simple, and if it’s smart enough to do everything above you can bet it’s smart enough to let you know when the battery needs to be replaced All you have to do to install is mount the included bracket on the ceiling, and attached. You link into the system using the Nest App, set it up, and done. Super simple, very useful, and a great way to help keep your family safe.

Side note: Even if you don’t want to do get a smart detector, you should at least have a dumb one! These are very important to keeping your family safe, so at least make sure you have something! Here is a great “dumb” detector: First Alert.

5. Smart Locks

Smart locks are a great way to keep from ever locking yourself out of the house again. They are exactly what they sound like – a lock (usually deadbolt or you can get an entire knob assembly) that has a keypad and/or you can control with your phone. There’s a big range in functionality in these. Some are a simple numerical pad that you program a code into that will unlock the door (might I suggest NOT using “1-2-3-4”). You can many times control these from your phone as well, so if you need to let someone in without sharing your code with them, you can do so.

Some locks have increased functionality, such as sensing when your phone is approaching the door and unlocking automatically. These will generally log every time the door is locked and unlocked, and some even have a small camera inside to document who unlocks the door. These are generally made with great safety and security in mind, and they are REALLY easy to install!

I’ve put together a little list of well-rated smart locks below, so be sure to check them out!

Summary

So there you have it! Home automation isn’t scary at all now, is it? It can really be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. It’s all about convenience and how automated and interconnected you want your home life to be. What are some of your favorite smart devices? Comment below and let me know! I’m kind of a geek and would love to check them out 🙂

5 Days in Quebec City: Our Quebec City Itinerary

August 15, 2019 by megan Leave a Comment

Quebec City Itinerary.jpg

Quick Recap – Our Québec Trip

When we had Judah in October 2018, one of our goals for his first year of life was to take an international vacation just the 3 of us. For a number of reasons that we’ll discuss in a future “traveling with a 9-month-old” blog post, we decided that Québec would be a great spot to spend a few days, specifically in Quebec City and Montreal. An added bonus was that even with as well-traveled as Chandler is, she had NEVER been to Canada! So we set off as a family of 3 into a new country (for Chandler and Judah) to spend a week exploring a new place, relaxing, and dreaming about the future of our family and our business. Traveling with a baby was definitely a bit slower pace than some of our previous trips, but we had an incredible time.

Bullet-Point Itinerary

Here is the quick summary of our itinerary in Quebec City! Feel free to jump to an individual day by clicking or read through the entire itinerary! Links to specific spots can be found at the bottom of the page.

  • Day 1: Travel (Nashville – NYC – Montreal, Drive to Quebec City)

  • Day 2: Resort Day, Boulangerie Du Lac, Chateau Fairmont Le Chatea Frontenac, Dinner at Le Chic Shack (amazing burgers)

  • Day 3: Driving around Île d’Orléans – Vignoble Ste-Pétronille (winery), Café Boutique La Maison Smith (lunch), Les Fromages de l’isle d’Orléans (famous cheeses), Érablière Richard Boily: Sugar Shack (Maple Syrup Farm…a hidden gym and our favorite part of the day!)

  • Day 4: Resort Day, Golf at Club de golf Mont Tourbillon,

  • Day 5: Resort Morning, Quebec City for lunch/exploring – Bistro L’Orygine (lunch – AMAZING), walking around Old Town Quebec and exploring,

  • Day 6: Morning at the resort packing and kayaking, lunch in the city

Day 1 – Travel Day from Nashville to Québec

We started the trip off with a bang – a 12-hour travel day! 12 hours of travel will weary even the most seasoned of travelers, so we were pretty tuckered out by the time we got in. We decided to fly from Nashville to Montreal, and then drive to Quebec City (a 3 hour drive). We did this for a couple of reasons:

  1. Flights were less expensive to Montreal

  2. We wanted to spend time in both Quebec City and Montreal, and thus…

  3. Renting a car and returning it to the same location is WAY less expensive than a one-way rental, which is what we would have had to do had we flown into Quebec City and then out of Montreal.

Even though this resulted in a little bit of a lengthier travel day, it’s also really fun to see the country as you drive between towns, especially in a new place! We arrived at our hotel – Entourage sur-le-lac – around 6pm, just enough time to let J crawl his wiggles out, put him to bed, pour a glass of wine and watch the season finale of the Bachelorette. All in all, as smooth of a travel day as you can ask for.

Also a quick shoutout (not at all sponsored) to Hotels.com and Expedia (who own hotels.com) – because I am an Expedia VIP (a story for another time), they hooked us up with an upgraded room at our resort. The resort is already awesome by itself, but this upgrade was such a surprise and a huge blessing to our family and our trip. We are very thankful to get to experience Quebec City in style.

Day 2 – Resort Day

Because of the long travel day, we wanted to take things pretty easy on our first full day in Quebec City. We spent the morning mostly hanging in our room looking out over the lake and getting work done. It was a rainy morning, so it was the perfect time to relax and play a little catch up from the travel day.

Once the weather cleared up a little, we grabbed some lunch and coffee at an AMAZING boulangerie (link below) near the resort, and headed out to the lake for a few minutes. Judah is still gettin used to being in the water, but he seemed to like it more this time than ever before. At nap time, Chandler headed out to the lake to do a little exploring of her own. The resort has kayaks, paddle boards, etc. for guests to use, so she headed out to the lake to spend a little time on the water.

In the evening we headed into Quebec City. We were welcomed with some INSANE traffic, as apparently it was the first night of a month-long festival called Grands Feux Loto-Québec. But traffic aside, once we found a parking spot, we were able to walk around the old city and it was quite charming. Even though it was a little more crowded than maybe is normal, we still had a wonderful time walking around the city, eating a burger at Le Chic Shack, and checking out the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac.

Day 3: Île d’Orléans

Located just outside of downtown Quebec City, the Île d’Orléans is a small island in the St. Lawrence River and is home to a lot of farming and agriculture. There is SO MUCH charm on this island – driving around it feels as if this little island has resisted jumping into the modern age, and I mean that in the best way. It’s not a step back in time – it’s a place where times seems to have simply slowed down.

All in all, it takes about an hour or so to drive all the way around the island (there is one major road that goes all the way around). Naturally as you stop at different places along the way, your trip will extend, but all that to say – it’s not a big island. When we entered the island, we headed southward. We started out by grabbing lunch at Café Boutique La Maison Smith. It’s a great little coffee shop and cafe! Low key and very charming. The cafe is directly across the street from a couple wineries, so naturally we walked over and checked that out after lunch.

From there, it’s pretty much just driving around and exploring through the different little towns. There are antique shops, bakeries, old churches, pretty much anything that has old-world charm. We love exploring this stuff, so we just took our time driving around the island and it was lovely.

There are two places of note that we stopped – firstly, Les Fromages de l’isle d’Orléans. This cheese factory is home to the oldest cheese in North America and is a staple of the Île d’Orléans. We wanted to get some cheese and didn’t really know what, but we saw everyone else coming in and grabbing the same thing, so we grabbed one to! Come to find out, this is their signature cheese – the 1608 cheese recipe that is the oldest cheese in North America. It is a round cheese patty requires grilling actually, so we have saved it to eat when we get home to Nashville.

The second place of note (and possibly our favorite spot of the trip) was the Cabane A Sucre (Sugar Shack) – a maple syrup farm. As a family who loves to eat pancakes, we also LOVE maple syrup. We totally would have missed this place is Chandler hadn’t read about it previously because it is tucked away in a forest of, what else, maple trees. When we drove in, we were surrounded by a forest of maple trees with green rubber tubing going from tree to tree. We would later learn that this is how they harvest the sugar water to turn into syrup. This syrup factory is a family owned operation – the family’s main business is actually trout farming, but the syrup farm has been in their family for many years and is now used as supplemental income.

The owner gave us a really informative tour of the facility, explained to us the syrup-making process, showed us their equipment, and let us taste their products (yum!). This was SUCH a fun experience and I feel like it’s a little hidden gym on the Île d’Orléans.

Day 4: City for Chandler, Golf for Jeremy

Day 4 was mostly another relaxing day at the resort. Chandler started the day early and went into Quebec City to explore, drink a cup of coffee, and get some pictures of the still-sleeping city. It’s one of her favorite things to do in our travels.

When she got back to the resort, the 3 of us grabbed breakfast and hung out for a bit. It was a BEAUTIFUL day so we were able to spend time on our deck overlooking the water, hanging out, and getting work done. In the afternoon, I went and played golf at Club de golf Mont Tourbillon, which is right across the lake from the Entourage. This is one of MY favorite things to do in our travels. It was a really beautiful course nestled in the mountains, and although I didn’t play as well as I would have liked, it was very fun.

Day 5: Afternoon in Quebec City

We spent the morning of day 5 hanging at the resort and getting some work done. Judah had a little trouble sleeping the night before, so we were all moving a little slow. After Judah’s first nap, we loaded up and went into Quebec City for lunch and some rainy day exploring. We ate at an AMAZING spot called Bistro L’Orygine. Very cool design, VERY tasty food. It’s a farm to table restaurant that sources all its ingredients locally. We each got the chef’s sample meal so that we could try a variety of menu items. They did not disappoint in the least.

After lunch, we spent a little time exploring old town QC. We love just walking around and taking in the culture. It was pretty busy in this area when we were there, so we didn’t stick around for a really long time. I do feel like we got a good glimpse of the neighborhood and very much enjoyed walking around to check it out!

We ended the afternoon at the resort, getting a little work done, hanging by the lake, and Judah was working on his mountain climbing.

Day 6

We spent the morning at the resort getting packed up and ready to head to Montreal. Once we were all packed, Chandler headed out to the water one last time to get a little kayaking in while I hung out on the porch soaking up the mountain air and doing a little reading. I love relaxing mornings, especially in a place like this!

Once Judah woke up from his nap, we packed the car and headed into QC one more time. We went to a different part of the city than we had explored before – the Rue Saint-Jean, which is a hip neighborhood to the west of old town. We got lunch at Bols Et Poke, which was a GREAT poke bowl spot. So fresh and tasty – just what we were wanting. We walked around a little more and found a great coffee shop (the first good coffee we found in QC, although admittedly we didn’t try very hard before this) called Cantook. Judah made some new friends on the street while we sat outside enjoying a nice cup of coffee, and then we headed out to Montreal.

Summary

This was a different kind of trip for us. If you’ve read any of our previous travel blogs (some highlights being Seattle, Israel, France, Iceland, Grand Canyon, Italy, England), you might know that we generally do vacations at breakneck pace. We see and do A LOT in the time that we have, often because our trips are generally 5-7 days and we want to make the most of where we are. That’s a great way to do it, BUT when you have a 9-month old in tow things just look a little different. And honestly, I loved it.

This vacation was a more relaxed pace. Yes we could have done more and seen more in QC. Yes we could have eaten at a few more cool spots. Yes we could have spent more time exploring different parts of the city. But that’s not what this trip was about. We spent every morning leisurely at the resort, eating breakfast at the restaurant, hanging out on the porch or at the lake, simply being together and enjoying each other and the beautiful surroundings. Then after first nap, we would go into town or do whatever it was that we were doing for the day. We went at it hard for a few hours, then came back to the resort to finish out the day at the lake. It’s different, but I loved the pace. It’s a lot easier to take it slow when the place you are is so beautiful, and that is exactly what we needed.

Product Review – Haven Sofa by West Elm (Performance Washed Canvas, Feather Gray)

August 1, 2019 by megan 60 Comments

HAven Sofa.jpg

Hey all! Today on the blog we wanted to do a little product review of one of our newest pieces of furniture – our living room sofa! We bought this just before our little boy was born because while we liked our other sofa, it just wasn’t a great lounging sofa. We wanted to be able to fit mom, dad, baby, maybe a dog and/or cats, all very comfortably on our sofa. So we set off to find the perfect fit. Ultimately we decided on the Haven Sofa by West Elm. This is an honest review of that purchase.

Overview

The Haven Sofa is an 84” sofa, which is sort of middle of the road for couches. Generally you’ll see sofas in the 78”-92” range, so the Haven Sofa is a pretty standard size. This sofa was designed to lounge – “Its deep, comfy seat and low, padded arms give it an incredible sink-right-in quality that’s perfect for the whole family.” (westelm.com). The seat cushions are a foam core wrapped in down alternative, and back cushions are a down alternative and poly fiber blend. Cushions are reversible and covers unzip and are removable for cleaning. It’s made to order in the good ole US of A.

IMG_4830.jpg

Price – 7 of 10

The sofa is priced at $1499-1799, depending on the material and color you choose. While it’s definitely not the most expensive couch you can get, it certainly warrants consideration and isn’t a purchase you’d want to just “give it a try.” Sofas from West Elm aren’t cheap, and this was definitely more of a splurge item for us. All that said, the value for this sofa is pretty good, as I think it’s one of West Elms better lines.

IMPORTANT: West Elm runs specials and sales very frequently, and I’ve seen this sofa on sale a number of times. In fact, at the moment I’m writing this, there is a 20% off sale that would apply to this couch, bringing the price down to $1199.20 – $1439.20. That’s a big savings! So if you can wait for a sale, that can help a lot.

IMG_4841.jpg

Comfort – 8 of 10

Comfort is in the eye of the lounger – but I will say that I find this couch VERY comfortable. It’s not so soft that it swallows you up, but it isn’t stiff in the least either. It’s a very nice balance as far as the softness goes. The only thing I sometimes notice is that the padding on the arms isn’t super comfortable, BUT we keep a bunch of pillows on our sofa, so this is no problem for us whatsoever. If you don’t have any extra pillows or anything, the cushioning on the arms would probably not suffice for lounging. But again, that’s an easy fix with some pillows, which you probably have on the sofa anyway.

The couch itself is a really deep couch – whether I want to lounge back with my feet up on the coffee table, or lay sideways the length of the couch, there is plenty of room to do either. It’s definitely deeper than other couches we tested out during our search process, but I really like that in a lounging couch.

Another note on dimensions – this couch is pretty low to the ground. It works great for us for it to be low, but it might not be exactly what you’re looking for. Again, nothing wrong with being low, just important to note along the way.

The Performance Washed Canvas is also really comfortable. It isn’t rough or rigid like some canvas can be (I assume that the “performance washing” softens the material). It is a really comfortable and not stiff in the least. It’s a great material for a comfortable sofa.

IMG_4827.jpg

Durability – 9 of 10

We’ve had our Haven Sofa for almost a year now, and we are really happy with the durability! We rotate the cushions as needed to avoid sagging, and the material has taken everything we’ve thrown at it! We have a baby, a dog, and 2 cats, all of whom spend a good amount of time on this sofa, and the sofa still looks new! It’s a very sturdy construction, and we’ve been really happy with the durability.

As far as the durability of the performance washed canvas, again I’d say we are really pleased with it. We have everything coming into contact with it from animal claws to baby drool, and it seems to handle everything like a champ. No discoloration – just a comfortable, durable material.

Ease of Cleaning

Like I mentioned above, the cushion covers are zip-up, which means you can remove them to clean if desired. This is a really nice feature, although we haven’t really needed to.

The important part of keeping this sofa clean is to pre-treat it with some sort of fabric protector like Vectra. Vectra is what we used based on the recommendation from an upholsterer we work with in town, and it has worked great. The basic point is that as soon as you get your sofa, take a day to apply the fabric protector (you can’t sit on it for a certain amount of time). That will save you loads of headache in the long run!

Because we treated the material with Vectra, any time we get a spill, we simply spot clean with Thieves Cleaner and it does the trick. I can’t recommend highly enough that you protect your sofa with Vectra or some sort of fabric protector. It has really made all the difference.

Summary

If you’re looking for a really comfortable and durable couch, I think that you would be really happy with the Haven Sofa. It definitely isn’t the fanciest couch, but it is sturdy, comfortable, stylish, and durable. I would HIGHLY recommend treating it with fabric protector to help keep it clean from stains or spills. I would also HIGHLY recommend going to West Elm and giving it a try before buying! This is one of their standard lines, and they almost always will have one in stock for you to sit on.
