While this is primarily a blog about home design, it is hard to ignore the fact that we travel…a lot. I was gone 104 days last year, and Jeremy more like 150. We have been to a new foreign country every year of our marriage and lots of stateside adventures too. As bloggers, we love to share about those travels. I feel like traveling is one of the things that gives me a deep appreciation for the beauty of the world around us. That appreciation informs my love for interior design and bringing the beauty of this beautiful earth into our homes.
That said, I plan on continuing to blog about the traveling we do. (See the travel tab above for more of our adventures like Iceland, Italy and England).
Our latest adventure was stateside and was unexpectedly mind blowing. We had a business trip to Phoenix the second week of January, so we decided to come in about 36 hours early and see the Grand Canyon while we were in the region. I had visited once as a teenager when my family passed by on a road trip. Jeremy had never seen it before.
So we landed in Phoenix, picked up a rental car and headed North. It’s a 3 hour drive that we lengthened a bit by stopping by Sedona on the way. I loved the red rocks and colorful landscape. So different from anything we see in Tennessee!
There are so many beautiful places to pull off the drive for photos. I was so amazed at the diversity of the landscape in Arizona. From the desert landscape of the southern regions to the red rocks of Sedona to the mountainous Flagstaff and up to the Grand Canyon.
Once we got up to the canyon (the South Rim), we knew we were running short on time before the sunset so we did research in advance for the best lookout points to watch the sunset and ended up driving down Hermit Rd. As soon as we saw the canyon peeking through the trees, I started squealing and asking Jeremy to drive faster.
We pulled up to Maricopa point, parked our car and walked to the edge. We were the only people at the lookout point and the only people we could see for miles. It was honestly one of the most breathtaking moments of my life. I had tears in my eyes as we surveyed the majesty of the canyon. It really can’t be captured in photos.
That night we ate dinner in bed at the hotel and went to bed early so we culd wake up for the sunrise. The benefit of the winter is that the sun rises a bit later; the struggle is that it’s cold! But we made it to Hopi Point an hour before the sun was scheduled to rise (bundled up with coffees in hand) so that we could soak in every moment. Even on a cloudy morning, it was such a beautiful experience.
I love to catch the sunrise almost everywhere we go. There’s nothing quite like seeing a place as it comes alive in the morning.
After the sunrise, we had enough time for a short hike into the canyon. The South Kaibab trail is a great option for a challenging but rewarding hike. You can hike it for days or just go in for a mile or two and turn back around like we did.
‘We dropped our vlogging camera at the beginning of the trail and it broke (so sad!) but we tried not to let it dampen our spirits as we reveled in the gorgeous views.
Even though we were only there for less than 24 hours, our trip to the Grand Canyon was one that we will always remember and a great way to begin 2017!
