Jeremy & Chandler Part 2: The Ceremony

May 31, 2013 by megan 12 Comments

Jeremy & Chandler Ceremony

The guests are beginning to arrive. Breathe. My groom is in the hall across the cobblestone walkway, so I need to stay away from the window. Breathe. My bridesmaids are praying over me, and my mom is crying for the first time today. Breathe. The wedding party is lining up and the string duet has started playing. Breathe. It’s your turn next.  Keep breathing. Deep breaths, Chandler. Your dreams are about to come true.
Such was my thought process as the joy mixed with nerves and a haze fell over everything like I was walking through a dream. The morning had been easy. Now I had to walk down that aisle in front of everyone I loved and try to hold myself together. I gave myself the best pep talk I could muster.

Jeremy & Chandler Ceremony

The rain was coming down slowly, and umbrellas saved the day for our maids and men as they waited outside the chapel. My sweet sister Raegan and Jeremy’s best man Brad sang “What It Ought To Be” by Audrey Assad as the parents and grandmothers were seated.
My groom got settled up front, and the couples walked down the aisle. I wish I could have seen this in person!

Then it was my turn. My daddy came and got me at the chapel and escorted me into place with an umbrella. Then I took a deep breath and he kissed my forehead before the doors opened and I saw my groom waiting at the other end of the stone aisle.

He was beaming and holding back tears. I thought I was holding back tears too, but looking back I think it was pretty obvious. Every hope I had for that moment came to life and all I could see was Jeremy on the other side.  My mom stood up first and the guests had been instructed to stand up as I passed.
I love the moment when my daddy gave me away, and you could see the love in his eyes and in Jeremy’s. I am blessed with a daddy that has shown me what love looks like in the way he loves my momma and his girls. Although he tried to give me away before he was supposed to, we got through it and with the words “her mother and I,” he took his place next to my mom who was holding her composure beautifully.
We were blessed to be married by the pastor who had walked with us through our relationship, Mike Harder. About a year into our dating relationship, we read a book that challenged us to have mentors in our relationship that would speak wisdom into our lives and hold us accountable to a godly dating relationship. Our pastor Mike and his wife Tabitha filled that role for us, and I will be forever grateful. With both our parents in far away cities, I believe having a couple to set an example for us and to ask us hard questions was pivotal in our success.

The ceremony was so personal and filled with the Gospel. Amidst the standard vows and exchange of rings, Mike presented the Gospel and related it to the marriage covenant we were making. It was a priority for us that the ceremony be not just about us but about Jesus.
Mike also asked us in advance to list things that we loved about each other. When he started to read Jeremy’s, the first on the list was “She’s so beautiful. Girl look at that body. She works out.” Yes. Even the lyrics from “Sexy and I Know It” made it into the wedding. I blushed. We all laughed.
I managed to hold my composure until I heard him say his vows, and I got that uncomfortable knot in my throat that warns you that you are about to cry. I only shed a few tears and then the happiness cleared the knot.
After that second sparkly diamond band was securely on my finger, my sister Sydney and best man Brad sang “I Have and I Always Will” over us as we lit the unity candle and took communion.

Then his father and mine came to the front and laid their hands on us in prayer. I have never been more grateful for the wisdom of our fathers.
As the music ended and the sniffles died down, I began giggling in recognition of what was about to happen. “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride.”
We kissed. We smiled. We turned around. I could hardly believe it was over. We were locked in for life, and it could not have felt more right.

Goodbye Big Blank Wall

building a frame out of trim - all precious and pleasant blogbuilding a frame out of trim - all precious and pleasant blog

We have lived in the house for over two months now, and most of the walls have remained blank canvases…waiting for me to put my creative stamp on them once I feel more confident in the direction I want to take the room. One of my goals with owning this home is to really take the time to make it exactly what we want rather than just put things in place for the sake of having something there.
Since the basic bones of the living room are in place, it seems like it is about time to hang things up! I had grand plans of creating some wooden stencil art to hang above the couch. I knew I wanted a large piece of statement art that pulled color into the room rather than several smaller items. Then, Jeremy & I visited Old Time Pottery on a whim, and he found this:
Eureka! Beautiful colors, lovely city scape, perfect size, and something that brings life to the wall without being too busy. The price tag said it had been discounted from $79.99 (not a bad price to begin with) to $17.50. We’ll take it. It was discounted because of a badly scratched frame, and we knew that was an easy fix. The frame was a color and material I didn’t like anyway…so it didn’t really matter that it was scratched (although my wallet thanked me profusely).
So we brought it home and got to work.

We knew we needed to remove the existing frame and build a new one, and rather than paint wood white, we decided to buy already white trim to create the frame.

So we picked up the trim we liked the most and got two 8 foot strips of white trim at about $9.00 a piece. $18.00 is not too bad for a 40″x40″ frame.

Lowes will only cut straight lines in the store, so we purchased a miter box kit which included a miter box and a saw to cut the trim at 45 degree angles.
‘

We knew we needed the inside of the frame to measure 34″ square for the size of the art, so Jeremy measured, and I helped him cut the parts.

tip: be sure to pay attention that you keep the same side facing out on all sides. Otherwise you will cut one with the outside facing in and have to go back to the store and get another strip of trim. Not like we know from experience or anything…*cough*

After all of the strips were cut, we assembled the frame with our handy dandy staple gun. We simply stapled over the corners. It was not very sturdy, but we knew once we attached the art it would be sturdier.
Next, I flipped the frame around and removed all the staples holding the art to the existing frame.

The art was simply adhered to a piece of cardboard, so it was easy to move the cardboard over to the new frame and staple it to the back of the frame.
Then I added picture hanging hooks to each side of the frame.

And enlisted my handy husband to hang the completed art!
The room is really starting to come together! I’m really excited about the colors this adds to the room without overpowering the space! And the white trim frame pops perfectly against the wall. I like it ten times better than the original frame!

Next stop…gallery wall behind the TV.

A Gift to Warm a Home

May 28, 2013 by megan 6 Comments

housewarming gift idea

Do you remember that scene in “It’s a Wonderful Life” when George and Mary Bailey welcome the Martini family to their first home with a wonderful basket of housewarming goodies? Mary Bailey looks so picturesque with her little 1940s outfit and perfectly curled hair. I want to be like her, and I love seeing the joy on the Martini family’s faces as they start their lives in a home of their very own.
Inspired by the gifts that Mary & George Bailey gave to the Martinis, I decided to pull together a little housewarming basket as part of a wedding gift to some our sweet friends who just moved into their first home together. You can see a little bit more of their life & home over at their blog: Home Sweet Love.

traditional housewarming gift

This simple and traditional housewarming basket was fun and simple to assemble.

After I picked up a basket at a local thrift store and dressed it up with some jute and scrap fabric, I filled it with a few symbolic things.

traditional housewarming gifttraditional housewarming gifttraditional housewarming gifttraditional housewarming gifttraditional housewarming gift

Bread – that this house may never know hunger. I made homemade chocolate chip zucchini bread. Probably not the lifelong fix all for household hunger, but delicious all the same. Wine – that joy and prosperity may reign forever.
Candles – to light the dark times.
Salt – that life may always have flavor. I went with the basic Morton’s salt. Doesn’t get more traditional (or practical) than that!
Finally, I designed a little card to accompany the gift that explained each part of the traditional housewarming gift.

Happy nesting Josh & Hollie!

Painting Laminate #2: Garage Sale Find to Beautiful Blue Desk

May 24, 2013 by megan 10 Comments

Gray-blue desk transformation - All Precious And Pleasant Blog

For a more detailed description of how to paint laminate, see my first painted laminate dresser/tv stand project here.
This desk was one of the simplest painting projects I have done so far because it was all one color, I had painted laminate furniture before, and using a darker color is generally easier than the last few white painting projects I have tackled because it coats so quickly.

I found this desk at a garage sale without a price. I could tell the seller was anxious to get rid of it, so I offered 10 bucks and he took it. It is very sturdy and compact but with a lot of surface space, so it works well in our little office space. But when I purchased it, it was pretty beaten up and needed a lot of work.

Here is the before and after.

I removed the drawers and sanded everything down with our orbital sander and 220 grit sandpaper. I especially smoothed out the corners that were chipping and tried to sand  down major scratches the best that I could without taking off too much of the laminate veneer.
I used Glidden Gripper Primer which is the key to painting laminate successfully. I love this stuff!
Two coats of primer.
And two coats of this lovely gray-blue color. It is Magnet Dapple by Valspar. I think I even could have gone a shade darker and been happy with it.

The total cost for this desk was $22.00. $10 for the desk and $12 for the paint. I already had the primer and the rollers. Also, I only used about half the paint, so it will save me money on a future project whenever I decide to use the rest of it!

Jeremy is working on his masters, so I hope this will be a lovely place of contemplative study.

We plan on painting the walls Revere Pewter just like the kitchen & living room spaces. I have grand plans for a stenciled accent wall, colorful rug, and cozy study chair in the room.

More office updates to come!

Simple Wall Art Update

May 23, 2013 by megan Leave a Comment

simple wall art update - All Precious and Pleasant Blog

Some projects are time consuming and difficult. This is not one of those projects. Also, you could pretty much take any old frame in your house and create this simple art.
I will start you out with the finished product because it just makes me so happy.

simple wall art update - All Precious and Pleasant Blog

I started with some really simple and pretty prints.
They looked great in our apartment, but I am no longer using any brown in our color scheme, so I decided to update it using some of the fabric from the pillows I sewed and a little white paint.

simple wall art update - All Precious and Pleasant Blog

I took the art apart. Ignore my red shoe strewn across the top of the picture.

simple wall art update - All Precious and Pleasant Blog

I cut the fabric into strips and alternated the fabric.

Then I pinned it all together.

simple wall art update - All Precious and Pleasant Blog

After a little sewing machine magic, I had everything ready to go. I hot glued the fabric around the original cardboard that was in the frames.

simple wall art update - All Precious and Pleasant Blog

Then I moved onto the frame. Here’s the thing. I sprayed it with the cheapest spray paint possible on a really humid day. That meant drippy, tacky paint and uneven spots. Ew.

simple wall art update - All Precious and Pleasant Blog

So I sanded everything down and hand painted it.

simple wall art update - All Precious and Pleasant Blog

Then I put everything back together. And voila! Such a simple update with a high impact!

simple wall art update - All Precious and Pleasant Blog

It makes the perfect statement on the wall by the window and balances out the fabrics on the couch.
Now I’m brainstorming other places I can use fabric in a frame. It’s just too easy not to do it again!

Backyard Dreaming & Scheming

May 21, 2013 by megan Leave a Comment

**Before I get to the post, I want to warn you that I have a slew of decor projects coming to the blog in the next couple of weeks–including a desk transformation later this week. We have been busy, and my decoration posts have been coming along slower than usual. Thanks for being patient, and keep coming back for some more fun before & afters soon.
Jeremy and I transitioned from having absolutely no yard at all in our little apartment to a half acre of land. We are still adjusting to the upkeep of a yard, but we feel blessed to have a yard to keep up.

Here is what it looks like now. I spared you from what it looked like right before it was mowed…it was bordering on wilderness.

Here is the view from the left side of the house by the kitchen door.
And the view of the back of the house from the back of the yard
The grilling patio on the side of the house & the kitchen door.
Here is the jungle on the other side of our fence.
And there are two raised garden beds that have fallen to disrepair.

Now dream with me…

firepit - backyard dreaming & schemingcafe lights - backyard dreaming & schemingbackyard dreaming & schemingbackyard dreaming & schemingdeck - backyard dreaming & schemingbackyard dreaming & scheming

One of our first goals is to have a fire pit by the autumn. Don’t you just love s’mores and late night fireside chats while the leaves turn colors? We are inspired by this one and this one.
Jeremy loves cafe lights, so we have to find a place for those somewhere.
At the side patio where the grill currently is, I would love to plant some flowers along the fence like this.
And plant a lovely garden filled with vegetables after we bring life back to the raised beds.
We also plan on building a deck over the carport for lots of outdoor dining.
Finally, I have no idea where I would create a space like this, but I cannot help but be inspired by Kristin from The Hunted Interior and her incredible outdoor entertaining space. I will take one order of that kind of style, please.

This lovely Spring weather just makes me want to be outside, and I know with time, we will create just the right outdoor entertaining space. Many of these plans probably will not come to fruition until next year, but it is fun to dream in the mean time.
